                  Thalassery is a small town situated in Kannur district, Kerala. Thalassery municipality was formed on 1 November 1866 according to the Madras Act 10 of 1865  of the British Indian Empire. It is the second oldest municipality in Kerala state. On 9 February 2014, Thalassery taluk was split in to two and Iritty taluk was formed.             Thalassery also known by its anglicized name Tellicherry. It is the political and cultural capital of Malabar. Thalassery has a unique place in the history of Kerala. Theyyam and Kalarippayattu are the most famous martial arts that has caught the attention of the entire world. Thalassery was the center of learning in north Kerala. The first Malayalam newspapers, novels and short stories in Malayalam were born in Thalassery. It's also the birthplace of the communist movement in Kerala. 'Rajya Samacharam', the first Malayalam newspaper, was published from Thalassery.

                Thalassery is often called as "Land of 3 C's " - Circus, Cricket and Cake. Lord Arthur Wellesley introduced Cricket to Thalassery. Tellicherry Fort, which was later renamed as Tellicherry Town Cricket Club was the first India's Cricket club, was formed in 1850 at Thalassery. Thalassery has a special place in modern history of Kerala as the pioneer of the regional bakery industry. The first bakery and biscuit factory named Royal Biscuit Factory, was started by Mambally Bapu in 1880 and the western style cakes were introduced in 1883. Thalassery is renowned as the cradle of Indian Circus. Kerala's first and India's second circus company named 'Malabar Grand Circus' founded at Chirakkara in 1904 by Pariyali Kannan, one of Keeleri Kunhikannan's(Father of Indian Circus) student.

Thalassery is also  famous for its cuisines. The most famous dish of Thalassery is Dum Biriyani, also known as Malabar Biriyani. Unlike other biriyani, Thalassery biriyani uses Kaima/Jeerakasala rice instead of usual basmati rice. Cuisines of Malabar have a distinct flavor and taste that has been influenced by the Arabs as well as by the locally available spices like black pepper, cinnamon, clove and cardamom. Other specialty is that they often cooked most of their dishes using coconut oil and ghee.
